Formal Rebuke by Republican-Led Chamber

Concise News Lead

The Republican-led House of Representatives has formally censured New York Representative Jamaal Bowman for an incident involving a fire alarm. Bowman is the 27th person to be censured by the chamber and the third just this year.

On Wednesday, the House voted to advance a GOP-led resolution to censure Bowman, a Democrat. The full House voted on Thursday to approve the resolution, with 216 Republicans voting in favor and 208 Democrats voting against.

Bowman pulled a fire alarm in the Capitol Building in February, prompting an evacuation. Republicans have accused him of using the fire alarm as a publicity stunt, while Democrats have defended his actions as an attempt to raise awareness about racial injustice.

Bowman is a first-term congressman who was elected in 2020. He is a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus.
